Cook County Board moves a step in the right direction
Commissioners get it “half right”
CHICAGO - Cook County Commissioners voted today to roll back half of the Stroger Sales Tax - bringing it down by half a percentage point. The vote was 12-5, with all five Republican Commissioners voting for the rollback. Earlier in the day, a full rollback of the one percent sales tax was shot down by the Democrats.
“A rare day in Cook County,” said Cook County GOP Chairman Lee Roupas. “A tax cut – rather than a tax hike. On behalf of taxpayers across Cook County, I want to thank the Republican Commissioners for their relentless work and attention to this issue. Not only is it a tangible tax reduction, but also a moral victory for taxpayers – finally. The entire one-percent rollback would have been ideal, but I guess the Democrats’ rhetoric on taxes is more symbolic than substantive. I urge the Republicans on the Board to continue the fight to lower taxes in Cook County.”
The Board has passed a rollback amendment twice already this year, but Stroger has vetoed it in both cases. However, new legislation out of Springfield require only 11 votes for a veto override, as opposed to 14.
